Africa, 2000

In November 2000, a team from The Eye Center traveled to Nakuru, Kenya to partner with Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) on a medical eye mission. The team included Dr. John H. Haines, Dr. Harry Eason, Dr. Harold Stein, Cheri VanBebber, Jodi Arcularius, Nancy Brenaman, Julie Easom-Maner, and Ann Stein. We were met at the Nairobi airport by Wanjiku Mathengi, M.D., our host ophthalmologist from Nakuru. Nakuru is located in a beautiful place called the Rift Valley Province.

Patients were screened and surgery performed at the Rift Valley Provincial Hospital. These people walked for many miles to reach the hospital and most came from homes that had no running water or electricity. The cataracts were very advanced and many patients, both children and adults, had corneal problems as a result of injuries incurred while running through the bush. Patients were very brave and stoic receiving their anesthetic injections near their eyes without relaxing medication. It was very emotional on postoperative rounds to see their happy expressions as patches were removed.
