Patients were screened and surgery performed at the Rift Valley Provincial Hospital. These people walked for many miles to reach the hospital and most came from homes that had no running water or electricity. The cataracts were very advanced and many patients, both children and adults, had corneal problems as a result of injuries incurred while running through the bush. Patients were very brave and stoic receiving their anesthetic injections near their eyes without relaxing medication. It was very emotional on postoperative rounds to see their happy expressions as patches were removed.
