Clear Vision After Cataract Surgery

Understanding PCO & YAG Laser Treatment|
Cataract surgery is highly successful, and most patients enjoy clearer vision afterward. However, some patients may notice their vision becoming cloudy or blurry months or even years after cataract surgery. One common cause is posterior capsule opacification (PCO).

What is PCO?
During cataract surgery, your cloudy natural lens is replaced with a clear artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL is held in place by a thin membrane called the lens capsule.

Over time, this capsule can become cloudy. This is called posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Although sometimes called a “secondary cataract” PCO is not a new cataract, and it does not mean your original cataract has returned.

PCO can occur in a significant number of patients following cataract surgery and may develop at any time after surgery.

Signs You May Have PCO
You may notice:

  • Blurry or hazy vision

  • Reduced sharpness or clarity

  • Increased glare or difficulty with bright lights

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Vision that seems similar to what you experienced before cataract surgery

If you experience these changes, your eye doctor can determine whether PCO is the cause.

YAG Laser: A Simple Treatment
PCO is typically treated with a YAG laser capsulotomy. During this quick, in-office procedure, your doctor uses a specialized laser to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule behind your IOL.

The artificial lens does not need to be removed or replaced.
YAG laser treatment generally takes only a few minutes. Your eye may be dilated beforehand, and you can typically return home shortly afterward.

What Can I Expect?
Many patients experience improved clarity after YAG laser treatment. Your doctor will discuss what you can expect based on your individual eye health and vision needs.

As with any procedure, there are potential risks.
